A smoothie, also known as smoothy or smoothee, is a chilled beverage made from fresh fruit and vegetables using a powerful electric blender  with blunt blades.

Sometimes smoothies include added sugar and crushed ice.

The drink dates back to the 1960s in the USA. It became popular and widely available in ice cream parlours and health food stores.

Nowadays it is on the menu in main stream cafés. Even bottled or carton versions can be bought at supermarkets all over the world.

Simple Caesar Salad 

Ingredients

– 200 grams boiled chicken meat
– 200 grams Dutch cheese or any hard sort of cheese you like
– about 200 grams white or Chinese cabbage
– 200 grams white bread
– 2-3 cloves of garlic
– sour cream
– salt

Instructions

1. Cut the white bread into small square pieces. Fry it until it reaches a golden color. Don’t add any oil or butter while frying. At the end, add 2-3 cloves of finely chopped garlic.
2.  Cut the rest of the ingredients (chicken meat, cheese
   and cabbage) into small pieces.
3.  Mix everything and add sour cream and salt to your taste.

The European summer holiday season is especially enjoyed by relaxing at the seaside, lakeshore or open-air spas, enjoying one’s favourite activities or simply having a few days off work.

Despite the domination of supermarkets for shopping staples, not all family habits and customs have been abandoned or forgotten.

In Central Europe, many families still preserve home-grown fruit, herbs and vegetables. There is nothing nicer, in the depth of a bitter winter, than opening up a jar of preserves or pickles, knowing that they were from your own garden.

So from the middle of August until October, cellars, cool pantries and parlours are filled with preserved berries, apricots, peaches, apples, plums, pears, onions, beetroot, home- made ketchup, pickled cucumbers, dried herbs and mushrooms.

Here is a recipe for Draniki, which was sent to us by a reader from Belarus. It is easy to make and very, very tasty.

Ingredients
– potatoes
– salt
(No eggs, onions. Just potatoes and salt!)

Instructions
peel potatoes,
grate them (using a small grater),
add salt.
Then brown the Draniki, as with ordinary pancakes (fine pancakes) in a hot frying pan (add some vegetable oil).
Serve hot and with sour cream.

Misako sent us this recipe for banana pie, a Brazilian dessert. It looks delicious.

Ingredients
240 grams wheat flour
320 grams sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 beaten eggs
250 ml milk
5 tablespoons margarine (melted)
10 sliced bananas

Instructions
– Mix the dry ingredients (wheat flour, sugar and baking powder).
– Mix the eggs, milk and margarine in another bowl.
– Grease a baking pan. Pour into it alternate layers of the dry ingredient mixture and the sliced bananas.
– Pour the egg mixture on the top.
– Bake in a slow oven for 50 minutes.

Probably every Slovak would mention this meal as the first choice when asked to name the Slovak national dish.

Bryndza is a special cheese made  from sheep’s milk. It can be replaced by a cottage cheese made from cow’s milk but then it cannot be called Bryndzove halusky in Slovakia any more – it is Halusky s tvarohom (Dumplings with cottage cheese).

Ingredients

2-3 large uncooked potatoes
fine whole wheat flour
salt
smoked bacon
bryndza

Instructions

1/ Peel and finely grate the potatoes.
2/ Add flour in order to make a dough or mixture which is not too
tough but also not to watery. Some people add milk and an egg to the mixture
but it is not necessary to do so.
3/ Add salt to taste.
4/ Boil enough water in a large saucepan with 2 tbsp of salt.
5/ Then form the dumplings with a knife or teaspoon on, with cold water washed, wooden platter and thrown them into the bubbling salted water. (There is now special equipment with which you can form halusky more easily and which can be bought in shops.)
6/ Boil the dumplings a little.
7/ When the dumplings are done they will float on the surface of the water. Pick them out with a strainer, rinse with cold water and mix with bryndza.
8/ Cut up little pieces of smoked bacon and fry them. Then put the fried bacon pieces on top of the meal.

People usually serve Bryndzove halusky with a cup of ordinary milk.
