An outlaw named Juro Jánošík was born to a poor family in the north region of Central Europe, today’s Slovakia, in 1688.

He and his friend formed a group of outlaws that robbed the rich merchants and the nobility.

They shared part of their loot with the poor.

The group under Jánošík’s leadership never killed anyone which is almost unbelievable in those times.

Jánošík was caught and executed in 1713.

He was offered a pardon in exchange for naming his associates and location of the loot. He refused to give away any information, so a hook was pierced through his side and he was left dangling on the gallows to die.

Legend has it his last words were: “If you baked me, you should eat me.”

WORDS
outlaw: (in the past) a person who has broken the law and lives separately from the society.
the nobility: people of the highest social rank.
pardon: to make free from the legal penalty.
to dangle: to hang loosely.

Currently living in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are around 6 million inhabitants.

But there might be now more people of Irish descent living abroad than in their home country, especially in the United States.

The Great Famine in Ireland during the period between 1845 and 1852 was one of several pressing reasons for the poorer Irish to emigrate.

Potato blight, raging across Europe in those times, brought deprivation and starvation to the Irish lower classes.

Potatoes were the staple crop for most of the population living in Ireland during this period. In order to avoid mass starvation only emigration, mainly to the Americas, was a way for family survival.

Wherever the Irish settled they have never forgotten their family roots or the reason why their ancestors were forced away from their homeland.

WORDS
descent: the origin of a person.
descent in other languages

blight: a disease of plants.
blight in other languages

The Americas (also America): North and South America.

ancestor: someone who is your relative and who lived a long time ago.

It has been a popular belief throughout history that Cleopatra, the Egyptian queen, was a woman of outstanding beauty.

However, a Roman coin that is currently on display at the University of Newcastle in England might change some people’s minds.

The coin shows a woman with a protruding chin, a sharp nose and thin lips.

Great men of literature, such as Shakespeare and Chaucer, have written about the beauty of Cleopatra.
