A smoothie, also known as smoothy or smoothee, is a chilled beverage made from fresh fruit and vegetables using a powerful electric blender  with blunt blades.

Sometimes smoothies include added sugar and crushed ice.

The drink dates back to the 1960s in the USA. It became popular and widely available in ice cream parlours and health food stores.

Nowadays it is on the menu in main stream cafés. Even bottled or carton versions can be bought at supermarkets all over the world.

WORDS
blender (also liquidizer): a small electric appliance used in the kitchen for cutting vegetables, fruit, etc.
blunt: not sharp. 
parlour (AmE parlor): a shop for selling a particular food or service.
