Though China is a sports nation, ice hockey still belongs to those sports which are relatively new and unknown in the country.

Kunlun Red Star became the first team to join the KHL in the 2016-2017 season.

The Kontinetal Hockey League (KHL), is the second largest hockey league behind the NHL and is played in Europe and Asia.

The team had the minimum number of four Chinese players on its roster as it is required by the KHL rules.

However, during the Covid-19 era the team lost its connection to Chinese hockey  and now plays home games in Russia.
