First of May was chosen to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago.  

On May 1^st hundreds of thousands of workers across the United States went on strike demanding better working conditions and shorter work week hours.   

On May 4^th an unidentified person threw a bomb in the crowd and police responded by firing on the  workers.
